Chinese Tripiṭaka Canon | Overview

CBETA 23-division catalog, Tripiṭaka framework, major printed editions, and Kangyur comparison — essential guide for Chinese Buddhist canon studies.

This module introduces the structure of the Chinese Buddhist canon using CBETA’s official 23-division classification (based on the Taishō Tripiṭaka) and the five-category framework of Lü Cheng’s catalog scholarship.

Tripiṭaka framework

The Chinese canon is traditionally grouped into five major categories:

  1. Sūtra — discourses attributed to the Buddha and bodhisattvas
  2. Vinaya — monastic discipline and saṅgha procedure
  3. Śāstra / Abhidharma — commentarial and doctrinal treatises
  4. Tantra — esoteric root texts and ritual manuals
  5. Chinese compositions — indigenous commentaries, histories, and recorded sayings

Major printed editions

Edition Period Notes
Goryeo Canon 1010–1087 Korean woodblocks; CBETA base text
Song Sizi Canon Southern Song Zhejiang edition, widely influential
Yuan Puning Canon Yuan Monastery edition
Ming Jiaxing Canon Ming precursor to modern folio editions
Qianlong Canon (Dragon) 1733–1738 last large imperial Chinese canon
Japanese Taishō Canon 1924–1934 modern critical edition; CBETA structure

CBETA uses the Goryeo Canon as its default base, collated against Song, Yuan, and Ming witnesses in a searchable digital environment.

Tibetan canon comparison

Tibetan Chinese equivalent Contents
Kangyur Buddha-word collection sūtras, vinaya, tantras
Tengyur Treatise collection Indian commentaries

Tibetan classification follows lineage and theme rather than the Chinese 23-division scheme; cross-tradition research requires careful mapping.

Research pathway

  1. Learn the five-category framework on this page, then enter division-specific articles
  2. Use CBETA for T-number lookup; consult Taishō indexes and comprehensive catalogs
  3. Compare Goryeo, Song, and Dragon canon print editions for textual criticism
  4. Place texts in historical context via the Chinese Buddhism overview
  5. Cross-reference Sanskrit (GRETIL, SAT) and Pāli (PTS, SuttaCentral) databases for philology

Textual criticism notes

  • Base text: CBETA defaults to Goryeo; collation notes record Song–Yuan–Ming variants
  • Taishō limits: some texts rely on a single old witness without Sanskrit/Tibetan comparison
  • Multiple translations: major sūtras often have several Chinese versions (e.g. Nirvāṇa, Avataṃsaka)
  • Division disputes: occasional Taishō placement disagreements; see CBETA classification notes
